Heat pump and air conditioning units set up in a heating engineers' training centre

If you’re thinking about replacing an ageing gas, oil or LPG boiler, it’s worth checking what the government will put towards a low-carbon alternative before you commit to a like-for-like swap. The main scheme for homes in England and Wales is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and the grant comes straight off your installation cost.

What the grant pays towards

  • £9,000 towards an air source or ground source heat pump for homes heated by oil or LPG
  • £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump for homes on mains gas or electric heating
  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
  • £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump

Who can get it

In most cases you’ll need to:

  • Own the property you’re installing in
  • Be replacing fossil-fuel heating such as oil, LPG or gas
  • Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for the property
  • Use an MCS-certified installer

Check your home on GOV.UK

The government has a free online tool that asks a few questions about your home and tells you whether a heat pump could be suitable and which grants you may be able to get. It only takes a couple of minutes: Check if you could get a heat pump on GOV.UK (opens in a new tab).

What happens next

You don’t claim the grant yourself. As an MCS-certified installer, we confirm your eligibility during the survey, apply for the grant on your behalf and take it off your quote, so you never have to pay the full amount upfront and wait to be reimbursed. If the online checker says you could be eligible, book a survey and we’ll give you a clear, fixed price with the grant already applied.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the grant if my current boiler still works?

Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is about replacing fossil fuel heating, not about replacing broken heating. Your boiler does not need to have failed. What matters is that you own the property, have a valid EPC, and are replacing fossil fuel or non heat pump electric heating.

Can landlords claim the grant?

Yes. The scheme is open to property owners, including landlords, for residential properties in England and Wales. One grant is available per property, and new builds are normally excluded.

Do I need insulation work done first?

No. The requirement for an EPC with no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations was removed in May 2024, though many websites have not caught up. Insulation still makes a heat pump cheaper to run, so it is worth doing, but it is no longer a condition of the grant.
