An old floor-standing oil boiler with its casing removed and the burner exposed

Boilers rarely fail without warning. Here are five signs worth paying attention to before a full breakdown forces the decision for you.

1. It’s over 10–15 years old

Most boilers have a realistic lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Even if it’s still working, an older boiler is likely running well below the efficiency of a modern condensing model, and replacement parts become harder and more expensive to source as a model ages out of production.

2. Rising energy bills with no change in usage

If your heating bills are climbing even though your usage hasn’t changed, your boiler is likely losing efficiency as it ages, working harder to produce the same amount of heat.

3. Frequent breakdowns and repairs

One repair a year might be a fluke. Two or three call-outs in a single winter is usually a sign the boiler is reaching the end of its useful life, and the cost of repeated repairs often adds up to more than a chunk of a replacement.

4. Strange noises, smells or leaks

Banging, whistling or gurgling (kettling), a persistent smell near the boiler, or any sign of water pooling underneath are all signs worth having checked promptly, both for comfort and, in the case of any suspected gas or carbon monoxide issue, for safety.

5. Yellow rather than blue flame

A healthy gas flame burns blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and a possible carbon monoxide risk, and should be treated as urgent, not something to monitor.

What to do next

If two or more of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting your boiler assessed before it fails entirely, ideally not in the middle of a cold snap. We offer honest advice on repair versus replacement, and if replacement makes more sense, we’ll help you choose the right boiler, or explore whether a heat pump could be a better long-term fit.
